About MEA Charity

MEA NSW Australia Ltd (MEA Charity) is a community-based, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to ensuring no family goes hungry. Since 2022, we’ve been providing affordable food hampers and low cost groceries to families and individuals facing hardship, while rescuing surplus food from local businesses to reduce waste and create a more sustainable future. Our core values drive us to support the Sydney community.

Our Impact on Sydney Families

Since opening our doors in 2022, MEA Charity has supported hundreds of families across Sydney struggling with the rising cost of living, unemployment, homelessness, and unexpected crises. Through our affordable food hampers, we provide nutritious groceries, emergency food relief, weekly support for the elderly, and affordable bulk hampers for newly arrived migrant and refugee families.

One mother recently shared with us: “Without MEA, my kids would have gone to bed hungry some nights. The hampers mean I can feed them properly and still pay the rent. It’s been a lifeline.”

By turning surplus stock into practical food relief, MEA Charity has already rescued thousands of kilograms of food that would otherwise go to waste — and redirected it to Sydney households who need it most.

Our challenges

Like many grassroots charities, MEA faces several ongoing challenges as we continue to support the Sydney community:

  1. Growing Demand for Food Relief: The rising cost of living, housing pressures, and economic uncertainty mean more families than ever are reaching out for help.
Our plan: Expand our partnerships with local businesses, supermarkets, and food distributors to secure a steady flow of surplus food. We are also exploring collaborations with other charities to share resources and increase efficiency.
  2. Limited Funding & Resources: As a self-funded not-for-profit, MEA relies heavily on donations and community support to operate.
Our plan: Seek more corporate sponsorships, government grants, and philanthropic partnerships, while also building new fundraising streams such as community events and social enterprise initiatives.
  3. Food Waste & Logistics: Large amounts of perfectly good food still go to landfill due to mislabelling, damaged packaging, or short shelf life. At the same time, storing and distributing food quickly and safely is a challenge.
Our plan: Invest in better storage facilities, transport solutions, and volunteer training so we can rescue more food and get it to families faster.
  4. Awareness & Community Engagement: Many people still don’t know MEA exists or how they can help.
Our plan: Strengthen our outreach through social media, local schools, businesses, and councils, sharing real stories of impact to inspire donations and partnerships.

💡 Our Commitment: While these challenges are real, they also drive us to be more innovative and resilient. MEA’s vision is clear: to build a sustainable model of food relief that not only feeds families today, but also creates long-term dignity, resilience, and hope across our community.
